I catch early season trout on all sorts of flies, but you just can't beat a U.V. Scud.  They are easy to tie, and I rarely find anything that works better.  I tie them on a #12-16 BARBLESS hook, and each one only takes a few minutes.  The fly only has three components:  a coarse dubbed body made of "U.V. Tan Ice Dub", a shell made of the plastic bag the dubbing comes in, and a rib of copper wire.  Tie up a few this season and see how they work for you.
